Grace Donecker, RN, works on the Pediatrics Unit at St. Catherine Hospital. She was honored on May 12, 2006 during National Nurses Week as the recipient of the Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award. She was nominated for the award by her fellow RN associates. She said, "It is an honor just to be nominated and to be recognized for my work from those around me." An Award like this is a great thing because nurses are often too busy doing what we do best that we don't take the time to tell each other or ourselves that we did a good job." Gayleen Bernal, director of acute in-patient care said she respects the wisdom and clinical skills Donecker has brought to the profession. "She challenges me every day to search things out and find answers," Bernal said. "I appreciate every minute that Grace gives to us and to nursing." Other nominees included Delita Thummel, NBICU, Jo Hurd and Gerald Nichols, medical/surgical nurses. Twenty-three nuses have been recipients of this award since it began 20 years ago. Clinical Nurse Specialist Joan Booker said it best, "Florence may have first carried the lamp, but there are others that continue to light our way."
